11 volunteers travel to Kenya, some for the first time
On May 8th 11 volunteers left the UK bound for Thika via Dubai. For some it was the first time they had flown, for others it was their first time in Africa while the remainder were familiar with where we were going and what we were going to do. However, all were relieved that all the preparation and planning had been completed successfully and we were finally on our way.
We were also very excited and a little nervous about what awaited us — could we cope with the huge differences in culture, lifestyle and climate? Would we be able to contribute positively to the task, did we have the stamina needed? Many, many questions.
Arrival in Kenya
We arrived at Jomo Kenyatta airport Nairobi on May 9th tired and weary after nearly 24 hours of travelling for some, into the Kenya sunshine and the warm welcome from our Kenyan partners.
Once settled into our beautiful rural accommodation and after a good night’s sleep we were all ready for action. Two weeks then followed of hard work, wonderful fellowship and a wealth of new experiences. All of which culminated in the successful completion of our objective in completing the construction of the final classrooms for the school and the strengthening of existing friendships and the joy of making new ones. Thank you to all who participated and contributed with such enthusiasm and commitment.
